703: Carbink
I’m Luke Summerhayes and I love Carbink.
Earlier this year, I bought an engagement ring. It was my first, and I insist only, time buying a diamond. Diamonds are one of the hardest naturally occurring things on our planet, made from the same carbon as coal but squeezed by the intense heat and pressure of the gravity at our planet’s core.
Diamonds are beautiful, sparkling in interesting ways, and when found among other, duller rocks, they certainly seem magical and mysterious. They are not nearly as rare as the industry would have you believe, their prices marked up by artificial scarcity and some of the best marketing in history, their supply controlled by a small number of interests. I’m happy with the personal meaning of the diamond I purchased, but diamonds in general are not worth the financial nor the human cost they have extolled over the centuries.
Carbink is a little floating rock creature with rabbit-like ears and diamonds protruding here and there, our first rock and fairy type Pokemon.
Like a real Diamond, Carbink are formed under extraordinary circumstances.
X
Born from the temperatures and pressures deep underground, it fires beams from the stone in its head.
Y
It has slept underground for hundreds of millions of years since its birth. It's occasionally found during the excavation of caves.
And also like a real diamond, their value may be a little artificially inflated.
Moon
Although this Pokémon is not especially rare, its glittering, jewel-draped body draws attention from people.
Carbink’s name combines carbon with tinkle, as this is a twinkling, tinkling gem. It also sounds a little like carbuncle, the name given by European colonialists to various mythical creatures and cryptozoological phenomena in Latin American mountains and caves, sometimes depicted as a mammal, with Carbink’s distinctive ears, other times as a dragon, and always associated with coal and diamonds.
The Japanese name is メレシー Melecie, meaning small, cut, rare stones. The final part of the name, the cie, is spelled and pronounced like another Pokemon’s name.
Ultra Sun
Some say that deep beneath the surface of the world, a pack of Carbink live with their queen in a kingdom of jewels.
Shield
It's said that somewhere in the world, there's a mineral vein housing a large pack of slumbering Carbink. It's also said that this pack has a queen.
Perhaps we’ll hear more about this queen later?
